Diving in North Male Atoll

North Male Atoll has gained a reputation of tourism hub of Maldives. With a bouquet of brilliant coral formations, rich aquatic life, luxury accommodation, verdure foliage, sun-soaked beaches and tropical weather, North Male Atoll lures tourists entering Maldives. Male International Airport, a gateway to paradise destination i.e. Maldives, lies to the southeast of the atoll. North Male Atoll boasts of various unspoiled dive sites.

The atoll is dotted with dive sites, many of them well known in the diving community. Manta points, interesting reef formations, coral gardens and wrecks are all part of the diving experience in these atolls. Maldives Victory wreck dive is the most popular dive spot of the world. The Maldives Victory, an 110m long vessel, which sank in 1981 near Hulhule Island. The deck of the vessel lies at 25 m deep and the remaining hull at a depth of 30 m. The bow of the vessel houses big tunas. The Maldives Victory offers fascinating wreck diving experience. Old Shark Point, located to the southeast edge of Thila Fushi Channel, is one of the most frequently visited dive spots in Maldives. The water current is obstructed by immense submerged rocks, while attracting vibrant aquatic life. The place is popular for sighting sharks.

Lion's Head, Banana Reef, The Aquarium, Kuda Haa and Meeru Kandu are some of the most visited dive sites in North Male Atoll. Vilingili Corner to the north of Thulusdhoo Kandu showcases the school of gray reef sharks, eagle rays, napoleon wrasse and also white tip reef sharks. The Steps to the easternmost tip of the atoll is one of the well-kept sectrets of Maldives while whale sharks, eagle rays and napoleon wrasse swimming in the azure water of the sea.

Rasfari Corner, The Seagull Wreck, Fairytale Reef Manta Point, and Helengeli Thila are located to the northern side of North Male Atoll. The atoll is blessed with innumerable dive sites for both novices and advanced divers.

North Malé Atoll is of irregular shape. It is 58 km long and contains about 50 islands, including the capital Malé, hub of all visitors comming to dive in the Maldives.

There are also sandbanks, coral patches, innumerable farus and submerged shoals (called "haa" in Dhivehi). The general depths of the interior are between 25 and 35 fathoms (46 to 64 m). The bottom is sandy, and there are numerous passages on all sides. Seen from space it is considered one of the most beautiful atolls on the planet.
