Diving in Borneo
The Diving in this reagion is just stunning, being calified as "world class diving".
In West-Sabah and Sarawak the dive sites are all relatively easily reached either from Kota Kinabalu or from Kuching. Most of the diving is close to the shore, there are several marine parks and quite a lot of wrecks from world war II to be reconnoitered. A few hundred kilometers out from the west coast are several very exciting dive areas such as Layang Layang, the Luconia shoals and the Spratlys. Here you will find clear waters, untouched reefs and large pelagics.
Some world recognised dive areas in the East Sabah are Sipadan, Mabul and Kapalai. This area is surrounded by very rich reef life consisting of both hard and soft coral as well as all manner of reef fish. Sea turtles and white tip reef sharks can be seen on almost every dive and hammerhead and leopard sharks can occasionally be seen.
Travel to Borneo
Borneo is the third largest non-continental island in the world (after Greenland and New Guinea). It is located in Southeast Asia and is divided into three parts, administered by separate countries:
- Brunei: a sovereign country occupying two small portions of the northwestern coast.
- East Malaysia (Sabah and Sarawak regions): the Malaysian part, occupying the northern third of the island.
- Kalimantan: the Indonesian part, occupying the central and southern regions.
The whole island and surroundings is a natural wonder, being one of the less explored places in the world. Within Malaysian Borneo lies the world famous Sepilok Orangutang Sanctuary, and the impressive Mount Kinabalu (South East Asia’s highest mountain). There is also spectacular jungle trekking and longhouse tribes you can visit too, and some of the best scuba diving spots in the world like Sipadan, Mabul and Kapalai, or Lankayan on the east, and Layan Layan on the west.
