Apple Orchard

Reef
This site is special for the filter-feeding sea Cucumbers called sea Apples (Pseudocolochirus violaceus.
This sea Cucumber is round and of a bright red and purple color with white or yellow stripes. They feed on plankton which they catch with their tentacles. That these Echinoderms are referred as "cucumbers" derives from the fact that around Asia they are known under the name of trepang and used as a base for soups. The live animals are dried in the sun or in ovens and then the leathery skin becomes a sort of gelatinous substance during the cooking process.
