Alcatraz:
Alcatraz Iisland is located 10 minutes by boat east of RIU Touareg. The rocky Island carries the name of the big sea bird that is nesting on it. There is many ways to discover Alcatraz underwater, let’s focus on two of them.
Alcatraz Shallow: Alcatraz shallow is basically the sloping bottom of the island in northern direction or main land. The maximum depth we reach here is 7 metres and that means ideal conditions for beginners, course students or navigation dives. The bottom structure is mainly rocky with a few small sandy patches in between. Besides parrot fish, trumpet fish, surgeon fish, goat fish, sea breams and other typical Atlantic inhabitants you might also spot a leopard eel.
Alcatraz South:
Taking the Island to your right you can reach any depth up to 16 metres. The rocky bottom gently slopes down and turns into ridges and overhangs surrounded by small sand patches the deeper you get. Drift with the mild current and let it take you along big schools of sea breams or goat fish. Take your time and check out small cracks inside the ridges as there might be moray eels, small groupers or lobsters hiding away. As you reach the overhangs keep your eyes open for resting nurse sharks or big turtles. Take a closer look at the rocky bottom and you’ll be rewarded with scorpion fish, nudibranchs, fire worms, spider crabs and plenty of macro life.
