Fun Dive
The Maldives has a world-class diving reputation. The water’s average year-round temperature is a balmy 29C and the diving has excellent visibility of approximately 30 – 40 meters. Visibility is usually only lowered due to the presence of plankton, which can encourage Whale Shark activity. There really is no down side to this!
The Maldivian waters teem with an abundance of marine life. Two thousand species of tropical fish busy themselves amidst the brightly coloured palette of coral amongst which, parrotfish, napoleon wrasse, surgeonfish, batfish, anemone fish, oriental sweetlips, fusiliers, squirrelfish, Moorish idols, tuna, trevally, sailfish and barracuda are common in these waters.
A number of species of Sea Turtles sharks – including Reef, Nurse, Guitar, Thresher, Hammerhead and occasionally Tiger Sharks can be found as well as several species of Ray, inclusive of Manta Rays, that glide between the organic, underwater architecture ablaze with tiers of color and texture of various hard and soft coral and sponges where Table, Fan and Staghorn Corals can be found. Those who are fascinated with the ‘finer details’ will be delighted by the numerous nudibranchs and shrimps that can be found.

Open Water Diver course
Learn to dive and get certified with the PADI Open Water diver course in the beautiful Maldives.
What’s involved?
Day 1 – On your first day we cover the course paperwork and get into the theory of scuba diving. You’ll receive your course manuals and logbook as well as watch the PADI Open Water Diver video which has now been seen by millions of divers around the world. We’ll also help you through some knowledge review questions and quiz you on how much you’ve understood. This theory session usually takes a full day to complete. Alternatively you can save yourself this precious time during your vacation by completing the theory portion online. See our footnote on eLearning below or visit our eLearning page for a full description.
Day 2 – It’s time to get wet! After a briefing, conducted by your instructor to familiarize you with the skills you’ll be learning, we take you to a shallow area of the lagoon to put these skills into practice. Underwater your instructor will demonstrate a variety of diving essential skills that every diver must know in order to dive confidently and safely. After watching your instructor’s demonstration you will be given the opportunity to practice these skills yourself until you can master them confidently.
Day 3 – We leave the confines of the lagoon behind us to find deeper water around one of the brightly coloured reefs in the Maldives. Amidst the abundant fish and coral life you get to practice your new found skills on an actual scuba dive led by your instructor. On this day we complete the first two open water training dives of your course. Since you’re training in the Maldives where good diving is close at hand, this doesn’t usually take all day. After diving you’ll still have plenty of time to relax in the afternoon, update your Facebook profile picture and tweet to all your friends about the exciting things you’re experiencing!
Day 4 – On your final day we take you out on two more open water dives to complete the remaining course requirements. By now you’re well aware of what you’re doing and able to feel more relaxed and confident underwater. You’ll be briefly amazed just how much sense all that talk about buoyancy actually makes and then you’ll simply forget the theory as the schools of pretty fish grab your attention instead. After your last dive you’ll not only have done something adventurous with your holiday but you’ll also have earned your Open Water Diving license. Congratulations!
Who Can Participate? The minimum age for participants is 10 years. We will only allow participants who are under 12 years of age to enroll in the course once they have satisfactorily completed a Discover Scuba Diving experience and at the sole discretion of their supervising instructor. Participants under the age of 18 will need the consent of a parent or legal guardian who should be with the under age participant to sign the various course forms. Participants younger than 15 years of age will receive a PADI Junior Open Water Diver certification after satisfactorily completing the course. There is no maximum age limit.
Participants should be in good health. A part of the program paperwork includes a medical statement by which you self asses your fitness for diving. Individuals who are suffering from allergies or colds might experience difficulty in participating on the dive portions of the course. This could lead to not completing the course so if in doubt please consult your physician. Take a copy of the diver’s medical statement with you.
Participants should be confident in the water and be able to swim. We always recommend that you learn how to swim first before trying to learn how to dive. Please be advised that there is a 24-hour no diving before flying policy in effect in the Maldives. It’s better to schedule any diving related activities early on in your travel plans to avoid conflict with this local law. We would hate to turn you away simply because you are flying the next day.
