Portofino Marine Park has been a marine protected area since 1999 and is known as the best diving in the Mediterranean. It is rich with an abundance of large and small marine flora and fauna and offers a great variety of different dive experiences suitable for beginners through to advanced divers – there are caves, banks, wrecks and walls covered with corals and gorgonian. There are 20 different dive sites in the park within15 minutes navigation from the port of Santa Margherita. The marine park is home to one of the most famous dives in the world, “Il Cristo Degli Abissi” a giant submerged bronze statue created in 1954 to honour one of the first scuba diver pioneers, Dario Gonzatti who lost his life in 1947 testing early scuba equipment. Dario, together with Ludovico Mares and Enzo Cressi developed and tested the first scuba diving gear in these waters and went on to create the largest scuba equipment companies, Cressi and Mares. The statue is now a monument to all those who live their life for the ocean and a “must” see for all the divers at least once! Portofino Marine park is also home of “L’Isuela” which has been described as the most beautiful dive in the Mediterranean by the Frank Schneider of Tauchen Magazine who dives with DWS regularly and has featured L’Isuela in his book about the greatest reefs of the world. Portofino Marine Park is a unique marine environment, scientists from all over the world travel here to dive and research these waters. You can expect to see vibrant red corals, violet gorgonian, sunflower yellow Margherita Dei Mare, small colourful nudibranche, octopus, lobsters and shrimp; big marine life including the well known giant grouper of the Mediterranean, large schools of barracuda, snappers and tuna, and during the summer, the Giant Moon Fish arrive. For advanced divers, you can dive two WW2 wrecks, 30 minutes navigation, just outside the marine park and DWS can also arrange for you to dive the largest wreck in the world, THE HAVEN.
