Dive in Rum Cay and Conception Island

This was the first mooring and dive site on the Southern Bahamas itinerary for the Nekton Pilot (a live aboard dive boat), for a trip taken in late March 1998. Highly recommended.Dive site located off Conception Island.

Rum Cay is especially well known for its spectacular wall dives. Dynamite Wall is a fine example of the dividable tunnels that cut deep into the reef walls of Rum Cay. Staghorn and other species hang from the wall and sides of the canyons.

On Rum Cay's Northwest Wall deep sites such as Pinder Reef hold predictable sightings of sharks, rays and barracuda. Elsewhere divers explore tunnels and canyons that cut into the reef base under Rum Cay.

In Sumner Reef you'll find staghorn coral and turtle sightings are common.

The main attraction in Rum Cay is the Grand Canyon Dive site, a 60 foot coral wall that almost touches the surface of the water.

The site is composed a few hidden mushroom-shaped coral heads on the wall. Long overhanging ledges with a maze of tunnels are excellent for exploration. Look for the unique variety of colorful sponges and coral. Don't forget to look into the blue where usually sharks appear.

A relaxing dive in shallow water. The lobsters and crabs are prolific here. Look on the underside of the algae-covered coral heads and ledges for them specially in night-dive. Swim toward the wall for the good visibility.

This is a good spot for shallow and deep dive as well. The coral canyons on either side of the mooring drop to a sandy bottom in 60 feet. The canyons lead out to the wall but there are holes plenty through the coral. Stingrays and Spotted Eagle Rays are seen frequently.
