Sha'ab Bango (Erg Harni)
Hamata, Egypt
Reef
This dive site is made up of three separate large reefs, all with lush coral gardens. The west side of the most northerly reef is particularly excellent and offers a unique hard coral landscape that descends towards a sandy bottom. There are plenty of coral blocks here of various shapes and sizes. Keep a lookout for groupers, unicorn fish, fusiliers and blue spotted stingrays.
This site is best visited in calm weather as the underwater visibility can be poor in strong winds. The swell can also be powerful here, reaching up to 15m underwater. On the northwest of the reef, there is part of a wreck of a 65m long steamship - the Adamantia K - that sank on 23rd January 1958. The ship broke up on the reef and debris lies between 0-12m. Parts of the bow of the ship still exist and lie at an angle on the sandy seabed.
