Shark Cage Diving in South Africa
+1
vote
Dear all,
I am going to South Africa end of Nov / early Dec this year and am really interested to go shark cage diving (or any scuba-diving in general) on the south side of the country.
Any suggestions of dive sites or recommendations of dive shops?
Thanks!
Maggie

Hi Maggie,
I haven't actually done the cage diving thing yet, but maybe think about Mike Rutzen - he runs a company in Gansbaai and is a well-known GWS expert and documentarian (try get hold of and watch Sharkman - the doccie about him and GW Sharks, it's awesome) - his company's site:

Please let me know if you want more info on South Africa and the diving out here. if you are heading up the east coast Sodwana Bay is world-class diving and much warmer than the south coast :)
I'm not that regularly on CS at the moment but drop me an email -
rwpringle@gmail.com
- if you want more info.
Good choice on coming to SA by the way - you will fall in love with the country ;)
cheers!

hey there,
why does it have to be in a cage?
i went shark diving in december 2009 with out a cage on the east coast, aliwal shoal, if you are interested i am sure i written down the company somewhere.
you get in the water after putting a bait for the sharks in an old washing maschine drum.
there were about 40 sharks with us in the water, dusky sharks, reef sharks (if i remember correctly) and 2 tiger sharks
ok, no white ones but therefore there is no barrier in between, it was simply amazing!!!
so have fun what ever you do

@ Christine - the cage diving is specifically for Great Whites, because it is now illegal here to intentionally run dives with great whites outside the cage (you used to be able to with special permits).
As for the other sharks - yes Aliwal is a brilliant place for them... not sure if I like the idea of chumming (baiting) tiger sharks while I'm in the water though!

Hey there! there are plenty of cage diving companies in SA. But, you should try diving without the cage!!! With reef sharks, but amazing experience. We went a month ago in Durban. Sorry I cant remember the dive shop name. BUT TRY IT!!!!!

I went cage-diving with great whites in Mossel Bay in 1995. It was very interesting and exciting but it seems the company doesn't exist anymore...

All diving in South Africa is awesome and Sharks are common throughout the year in different areas. Cape Town is awesome for Great White cage diving but why not try a baited dive without a cage in Protea Banks. You can expect to see Bull Shark, Tiger Shark, Black Tip Shark and Hammerheads. Feel free to contact me for more details!
