Diving in Drake Bay

Most of the diving from Drake Bay is done around Caño Island, 40 minutes boat ride from the bay. The island is now a protected biological reserve, meaning sea life is abundant and you're in for some great diving.

The area is teeming life; you can get right up close turtles, Devil Rays, sharks, huge schools of fish, maybe a whale shark and the possiblity of a whale jumping out of the water on the journey to the island.

There are 6 great site around Caño Island, with super clear water averaging around 20-30 metres visiblity. Beginners will enjoy Coral Gardens, full of hard corals and interesting critters to find. The Shipwreck isn't really a wreck but you can often see sharks and giant rays hiding around the rocks.

The Devil's Pinnacle and Paradise are sites to get that little bit deeper and look out for sharks, rays and giant schools of fish. Enjoy the swim throughs, sharks and different reef fish at Shark Cave and Arches sites.

Travel to Drake Bay

Drake Bay is located in the northern area of the Osa Peninsula and is a great beachside destination off the normal tourist track. You can take a domestic flight from San Jose to Drake Bay or it's actually better to fly to Palmar Sur and catch a boat over due, expecially in the wet season when it can be difficult to get there.

There are a few beach front accommodation options, from bungalows, cabins and air conditioned luxury rooms, there's something for everyone's budget. You really are getting back to nature in Drake Bay, with over 450 species of birds in the area, you're sure to spot a few while taking a nature walk.

Take a guided tour through the Corcovado National Park and see if you can spot all four species of monkey that live here. The walk if 4-5 hours and needs to be booked in advance as the goverment has put restrictions on the number of people that visit the park.

Enjoy a day of diving or snorkelling around Caño Island, head out onto the water on a whale and dolphin tour. There's horseback riding adventures, mangrove tours, bird watching tours, kayaking and night tours. It really is all about the nature around Drake Bay.
