Van Damn State Beach
Mendocino, California
Reef Wall
This is fabulous dive site for beginners and well as advanced divers. The cove faces South so it is generally protected from the Northwest swells that dominate the area, the outer reef also breaks up lots of wave energy before it gets into the cove. The wall on the far North side is beautiful dive, lots of abalone, bat stars, and sunflower stars. This wall require a bit of a surface swim (~500 yrds) and thus may be best for more advanced divers or those use to surface swims. The reef to the southern side of the cove is much closer to shore and supports a similar ecosystem as the wall. The reef gets shallow in many place (~10ft) and is a shallow reef altogether (don't expect to get deeper than 45 ft). Visiting divers should realize that this is Northern California diving-full 7mm wetsuits, gloves, booties are a must have. Visibility is ~15ft and the water runs about 50 degrees.
