USS Perry
Koror, Palau
Wreck
One day before the US invasion of Peleliu and Angaur, this destroyer was sunk after hitting a mine. Despite numerous efforts over the years to discover its whereabouts, they only became known with certainty in 2000 when one of the survivors directed a team of divers to the spot. She is situated off Angaur, the most southerly island in Palau and lies in 75m of water. As such this is a decompression site and therefore can only be undertaken by the most experienced. Visibility is excellent.
The vessel herself is split in two at an angle of approximately 60 degrees. The mine sweeping gear that she was using at the time of the collision is still visible at the stern.
