Dive The Great Northern

Wreck Reef

Wreck diving to suit all levels on the Great Northern. This British cable-laying ship sank on New Years Eve 1903 and now sits at 12 metres, just off Pange Sandbank. She has become a magnificent artificial reef in the years since she sank and it has become home to a number of leaf fish, moray eels and lionfish. Parts of the ship can still be identified and some relics, including piles of charcoal from her engines, may still be found scattered around the ship (although not taken!).

The Great Northern is an ideal wreck for the beginner diver as it is only 12 metres deep. On top of that, it is also a great snorkel site.

Following our exploration of the ship, we move onto the complexly textured corals which ring the wreck and hide all manners of fish, from glass fish to octopus which hide in the many crevices.

After the sun goes down, why not try a night dive here? You may see some of the more nocturnal species such as cuttle fish, squid, crabs and free-swimming morays, along with the blue-spotted rays that hunt in the twilight hours.

CAPT Brian COOK USN January 12th, 2016 - 19:49:
I dove the remains of the GREAT NORTHERN today. REMAINS of a ship wreck. Mostly salvaged and 112 years have left scattered remains and a 40-60 by 3-4 foot piece of the hull. Really nothing to write home about. The Coral was ok. Very Rough and marginal visibility with the wind blowing about 24 knots. Not a TOTAL WASTE of the morning but Zanzibar's shoreside history would have been much MORE INTERESTING.
