Dive Ras Gamila

Reef Drift

Ras Gamila ("Delightful Cape" in Arabic) separates a vast and rather shallow sandy lagoon from the sea. It is an interesting place for a fine drift dive that is not too difficult. It is perfect at 12m-15m gliding you northwards over many large colonies of Porites coral, splendid Acropora corals (table corals) and beautiful Gorgonian Sea Fans. It is an ideal place to look out for Feathertail stingrays, Barracuda and Grouper.

Ras Gamila, the house reef of the Baron Resort, begins at the south of Ras Nasrani and ends at the lighthouse, entrance to the Straits of Tiran. This reef is great for all divers; beginners and experts alike, for its abundance of marine life. There are schools of yellowfin goatfish, baracudas, feathertail and honeycomb rays, as well as the ever present house turtle to be seen on every dive. Some mantas can be seen, especially during the summer months and with some luck you may encounter a whale shark. Due to the water current condition of the Straits of Tiran, spectacular hard coral formations have evolved. The reef falls off gradually from shallow water to a depth of about 10 – 15m with a sandy bottom (ideal for beginners) to a maximum depth of 30 - 40m.
