DIVE TRIPS Zenobia History The Zenobia was built in Sweden and was delivered to her owners in late 1979. She left Malmo, Sweden on her maiden voyage, bound for Tartous, Syria on 4 May 1980, loaded with 104 lorries with cargo destined for Mediterranean and the Middle East. She passed through the Strait of Gibraltar on 22 May 1980. On the way to Athens the captain noticed steering problems and the Zenobia began listing to port. Following checks, it was determined the list was caused by excess water that had been pumped into the ballast tanks, this was pumped out and she then departed for her penultimate stop at Larnaca, Cyprus before reaching Syria. She arrived at Larnaca on 2 June 1980, where the ballast problem had reoccurred, engineers discovered that the computerised pumping system was pumping excess water into the side ballast tanks, making the list progressively worse. On 4 June, the Zenobia was towed out of Larnaca harbour to prevent her becoming an obstruction should the worst happen and was left at anchor roughly 1.5 – 2 km offshore. On 5 June, with the ship listing at around 45° the captain dismissed the engineers and maintenance crew and requests from the captain to return her to Larnaca harbour were denied. At around 2:30am 7 June 1980, the Zenobia capsized and sank in Larnaca Bay to a depth of roughly 42 metres (138 ft), taking her estimated £200 million worth of cargo with her. According to local legend, the Zenobia's owners never collected the insurance money and no formal investigation has ever been published. Since sinking she has become a popular dive site for visitors to Cyprus and was named one of the world's top ten dive sites by The Times in March 2003. Dive Site. As a dive site, the Zenobia provides a wide range of challenges to scuba divers, from a fairly simple dive to 16 metres (52 ft) depth along the starboard side of the ship (suitable for newly qualified divers); moving up to a more advanced dive inside the upper car deck and accommodation block, right up to extremely adventurous dives within the lower car deck or the engine room (which are only suitable for very experienced divers). At 174m this wreck goes on and on and every dive brings something new and interesting to the diver. An absolute must for any diver! Limassol Area Are you looking for the best Mediterranean cruises ? Copper Wreck A British Man'O'War with copper bottomed hull foundered on the reef on the western tip of the Akrotiri Peninsula. Not much remains from the original wreck although you regularly retrieve the copper and brass pins embedded in bits of the hull. Caves Archway and many species of fish. 9 metres. Akrotiri Fish Reserve Amazing interaction with local marine life. A very shallow dive suitable for all divers. Hand feed groupers, moray eels, bream and bass. Many octopus to be found. 9 metres. Pharses II Wreck An open deck cargo ship of less than 1000 Tonnes lying on it's starboard side and intact. An abundance of marine life can be observed here. Penetration can be achieved although under strict supervision. 21 metres Three Stars Wreck This vessel caught fire and ran aground back in 1972. It is partly submerged in only 7 metres of water and very safe to enter in several parts. Interesting exploratory dive for all levels. Big Country A great multi-level site with many caves, overhangs and very large boulders some more than 12 metres high. Grouper, moray eels, octopus and large shoals of damselfish are found here. Max depth 23 metres. M.V. Habe Wreck A very good training wreck for beginners. This 1000 tonne Barge is semi-submerged against Limassol harbour wall. Although quite broken up it still makes for an interesting poke around dive. 9 metres. Twin Rocks Two large rocks protruding out of water from a depth of 21 metres. A blow hole can be found on the eastern rock. Caves and a lot of interesting marine life will be found in the surrounding area. Sharks Cove Don't panic... it used to be called fisherman's cove and sharks unfortunately have never been sighted here. A spectacular cove on the Akrotiri Peninsula. A submerged tunnel starts and ends the dive where in between you glide along the cliff face before circling over a rocky reef bottom. 12 metres. Tombs Very close to the shore there is a series of apparently man made caves which resemble ancient tombs. Very scenic with prolific marine life. 12 metres. Caverns and Caves 100 metres offshore in a depth of 14 metres you will find many interesting caves on a large reef. Varied marine life. Archways and Pinnacles A large Archway in 21 metres of water with four pinnacles situated on every major compass point. An abundance of marine and fish life to be found all over the area. Good Navigation Site. Cape Greco Area Cape Greco, also known as Cavo Greco is a headland in the southeastern part of the island of Cyprus. It is at the southern end of Famagusta Bay. It lies between the towns of Ayia Napa and Protaras, both of which are popular tourist resorts. It is frequently visited by many tourists for its natural beauty. It is a protected nature park. From the high points on the cliff that rests at the cape one can view amazing sights out to sea. According to local legend it is also the home of the 'Ayia Napa sea monster'. Green Bay This dive site is excellent for Beginners & Certified divers. We use this beautiful dive site for our ever popular Discover Scuba Diving Experience. Not dived in a while? This is the place for you; everything about the site makes it ideal in every way. It has an Easy Entry & Exit Point and a maximum depth of 10 metres. During every dive we visit the very popular Fish Rock just a few metres from the bay. Fish Rock is a haven for fish of many varieties including: Ornate Wrasses, Rainbow Wrasses, Zebra Breams, Two Banded Breams, Damsel Fish, Small Barracuda & many more. Search the rocks for Octopus, and visit the Statues, this really is a fantastic place to dive. If you’re into history then search for the Ancient Greek Anchor, and take some photos of the broken pots from centuries past. Maximum Depth: 10 Metres The Caves & Tunnels One of the best dive sites by far, not just our opinion but that of our returning customers each year. Situated in the un-spoilt National Park of Cape Greco the Caves & Tunnel dive site is stunning. As you make your way to the entry point and look into the crystal clear waters the smile on your face can only grow over the next 40-60 minutes. We head off in a southerly direction making our way through a gulley of lava rock, when after a few metres we’re looking down on some fantastic rock formations. The rocks open into a sandy runway where Moray Eels and small Ray can be found. After 50-60 metres you rise up over the sandy runway and bear right to the Cyprus Cave, a fantastic tunnel that’s light and crystal clear. We pause at the end to take in the amazing shape of the exit, the shape of Cyprus. You Will Be Amazed. We exit the tunnel onto a sandy plateau and search the rocks for Octopus, we then take you over the Cyprus Cave where you see your air bubbles seeping through the rocks, another amazing site. Down we go through a large hole back into the tunnel, out through into a rock garden that leads us to the Horse Shoe cave. Slipper Lobster have been seen hiding in the rocks. As we exit this amazing tunnel, we head back along the sandy runway to the exit point, but the fun doesn’t stop here, after a safety stop we enter the final cave and exit if the conditions allow through the blow hole. A truly fantastic dive. Maximum Depth 12 Metres The Chapel 1 A set of steps set in the rocks lead you down to the entry point, on your right is a cave, which many years ago was the Chapel, in recent years a new Chapel has been built above looking over Konos Bay. A giant stride entry takes you into 8 metres of water, and drops quickly to 20 metres then flattens out then drops slowly down. We bear round to the left into the bay where the water shallows out to 5 metres, clearly visible are large amounts of amphora. Maximum depth 30-40 Metres The Chapel 2 We use the same entry point but diving straight out along the Wall on the right side into the open sea. At the beginning of the dive we stay rather shallow, in about 12 Metres depth. We dive over large sea grass areas until we come to the point where the stony hill meets the sea grass at a depth of 28 to 29 Metres. A real range of colours paint a lovely picture in the sea. Many colourful sponges, rock roses and anemones can be seen along the rocky edge. An excellent dive site. On the way back we dive into shallower waters, passing sandy depressions and crevices. A good site for foraging in the rocks. Maximum Depth 30 Metres Cyclops A brilliant Wall Dive with some smaller caverns. Maximum depth is 18 Metres with a sandy bottom which is very often covered with hundreds of cone shells. In addition you may see moray eels, big sea stars in the sand, groupers, soldier and damselfishs. There have also been regular sightings of Rays. This is a magnificent dive site especially early morning. The entry point is not one of the easiest. Maximum depth 30 - 40 Metres Paphos Area Jubilee Shoals, probably one of the most talked about sites in Cyprus. A fantastic submarine cliff from 17 to 40 metres with pinnacles, caves and overhangs. Many large predatory fish have been sighted here as well as large groupers, octopus and morays. For the more experienced divers only, there is an amazing tunnel penetration. Other dive sites in the Paphos area include wrecks, reefs, caves and walls. Latchi - Polis -Akamas Area Many very scenic sites ideal for photographers and divers of all levels. Mostly coral reefs, walls and caves.
